previous nominees | Best Adapted Screenplay | Best Original Screenplay

Best Adapted Screenplay

  • Akiva Goldsman, A Beautiful Mind
  • Daniel Clowes and Terry Zwigoff, Ghost World
  • Rob Festinger and Todd Field, In The Bedroom
  • Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson, The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
  • Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Joe Stillman and Roger S.H. Schulman, Shrek
      Who will win?
      • Bams: The Lord Of The Rings. Oscar® loves an Epic Opus...
      • The Diva: A Beautiful Mind. This movie has apparently suckered the Academy thus far.

      Who should win?
      • Bams: Though it was notable more for its silences than the words in-between, In The Bedroom gets my pick. I'll forgo my WTFF? reaction to one of the others, for now.
      • The Diva: The Lord Of The Rings. If Ghost World wins, I'll end up needing to replace my television as my old one will have a shoe sticking out of the screen.

Who did win?: Akiva Goldsman, A Beautiful Mind
      • Bams: See the previous nominees for an explanation of why the ABM near-sweep of the major awards, leaves a question in my mind.

    Best Original Screenplay

  • Guillaume Laurant and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Amelie
  • Julian Fellowes, Gosford Park
  • Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, Memento
  • Milo Addica and Will Rokos, Monster's Ball
  • Wes Anderson & Owen Wilson, The Royal Tenenbaums
      Who will win?
      • Bams: This one's a tuffy. Memento is a near no-brainer for me, but good arguments could be had for The Royal Tenenbaums and Monster's Ball as well.
      • The Diva: Tough. Gosford Park.

      Who should win?
      • Bams: Having been snubbed on a technicality by the Writer's Guild (boo, Writer's Guild!) Memento just oughta walk clean away with this one.
      • The Diva: Memento should get it. But honestly, I'll be happy with anything other than Gosford Park.

Who did win?: Julian Fellowes, Gosford Park
      • Bams: Pardon my bitterness, but Memento was robbed. And I say that after having been put to sleep by Gosford Park, despite Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith's best efforts.

    Best Animated Feature

  • Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius
  • Monsters, Inc.
  • Shrek
      Who will win?
      • Bams: This category is missing at least one nomination: Waking Life. It's hard to take the category seriously without it (and with the inexplicable inclusion of another one, which I'll get to below). Having said that, Shrek will, and should, take this trophy.
      • The Diva: Shrek. The animation was so life-like. Totally groundbreaking.

      Who should win?
      • Bams: See, I was trying to be good. Shrek, I grok. Monsters, Inc., too. But Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius??? WTF? I mean, WTFF? That one, over Waking Life? Somebody tell that nominating committee to put down the pipe, walk away from the needle. Just Say No, jeez!
      • The Diva: Shrek.

      Who did win?: Shrek
      • Bams: That Shrek won was not a surprise. But Randy Newman finally winning for Best Song from Monsters, Inc., after 16 worthy tries in previous years? You go boy!

    Best Cinematography

  • Amelie
  • Black Hawk Down
  • The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
  • The Man Who Wasn't There
  • Moulin Rouge
      Who will win?
      • Bams: Moulin Rouge, in all its Bigness.
      • The Diva: The Lord Of The Rings. The backdrop was a character in and of itself.

      Who should win?
      • Bams: The Man Who Wasn't There. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
      • The Diva: The Lord Of The Rings. As much as I love Moulin Rouge, I feel stronger about The Lord Of The Rings.

    Best Visual Effects

  • A.I.: Artificial Intelligence
  • The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
  • Pearl Harbor
      Who will win?
      • Bams: The Lord Of The Rings. Rinse, Lather, Repeat...
      • The Diva: The Lord Of The Rings.

      Who should win?
      • Bams: Loath as I am to give it any recognition, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence did have that Look, as only Steven Spielberg can bring it.
      • The Diva: As much as I hate to say it, I'm thinking Pearl Harbor is a bit more deserving.

Who did win?: The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
      • Bams: ...though it did do its "Rinse, Lather, Repeat..." act in the secondary categories.

    Best Film Editing

  • A Beautiful Mind
  • Black Hawk Down
  • The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
  • Memento
  • Moulin Rouge
      Who will win?
      • Bams: Black Hawk Down, unless Memento sneaks in the back door.
      • The Diva: Black Hawk Down.

      Who should win?
      • Bams: The easiest pick of the night: Memento. No comp.
      • The Diva: Moulin Rouge, hands down.

Who did win?: Black Hawk Down
      • Bams: Sure, I was right; but I would've rather had my "should" wish be granted.
