The Digest

It's Christmas time in Whoville and all of the Whos' are bubbling over with excitement. All of them except Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen). Cindy Lou is struggling to discover the meaning of Christmas. She thinks that her father, Lou-Lou Who (Bill Irwin), and her mom, Betty Lou Who (Molly Shannon), have gone overboard. Her father seems to be intent on buying the most presents and her mother is consumed with decorating the house in order to out do her neighbor, Martha May Who-vier (Christine Baranski).

After hearing the tale about a hermit on the hill named The Grinch, Cindy Lou set out to find out about this creature. She has been told that he hates Christmas and that his heart is 2 sizes too small. Cindy Lou makes it her mission to make him happy. She learns why he has secluded himself from Whoville and hopes that giving him an award will make him love the people of Whoville. It backfires and he becomes angry. In his anger, he attempts to ruin Christmas by destroying all of the materialistic things, only to discover that you don't need presents, decorations, and trees to celebrate Christmas.

The Dish

I think this story is a very important lesson for all of us. One I've yet to learn because I can max out a card or two during Christmas... okay anytime of the year, but that's not the point. This story sets out to undo the damage we've done to children by commercializing Christmas. Obviously it didn't work on me, but hey maybe there's a 7 year old that needs saving.

This version didn't differ much from the cartoon and book we all love, except it attempts to give insight into why The Grinch is the way he is. He acts theway he does to cover up the pain of rejection. Hopefully kids will understand that when they are cruel to someone, it can cause life long damage. This made the movie a bit preachy in my opinion, but it needed to be said.

As I've said before, I'm not a Jim Carrey fan. I thought he did okay. I was a little irritated with some of his hamming and clowning. We could have done without it.
