The Digest

June Havens (Cameron Diaz) is in the Kansas airport trying to find her way onto a Boston-bound flight. She has flown to Kansas to pick up car part for her classic car which she hopes to present to her sister as a wedding gift- if she can get home. The flight she checked into is suddenly over booked. Surprisingly the man who has bumped into her twice and who bought his ticket at the list minute manages to get on. Right when she is resigned to not getting to Boston, a seat opens up and she is on the plane. The “full” plan has a few people on it besides the charming stranger who introduces himself as Roy Miller (Tom Cruise).

As Roy and June flirt with one another, oblivious to the other passenger, June excuses herself to the bathroom. In the 3 minutes that she’s gone, Roy is attacked by literally everyone on the plane. When June comes out of the bathroom, Roy fills her in on the situation and crash lads the plane

After the crash landing, June finds out more than about Roy. He is either a crazy rogue agent trying to selling a new weapon on the black market or he is really a good guy trying to keep the weapon off the black market.

Hot on his trail is his former partner, Fitzgerald (Peter Sarsgaard), who at the request of their bureau chief . But the question remains, who is really the bad guy?

The Dish

I really think they hit the right note with this one. It was almost like watching a parody of romantic comedies and action flicks. For one, I love movies about grown folks and added bonus- car chases and explosions.

I don’t like to use phrases like “He’s back”, but I’m kind of forced to. This was really the Tom Cruise that has been missing as of late. Close up shots show that he was doing quite a few of his own stunts, impressive. Some of the stunts were pretty cool and completely impossible which brings me to the “parody” comment I made. If I’m honest I did find a few things a little too unbelievable and they gave me pause. That shouldn’t have been the case. There is a fine line between unbelievably cool and just unbelievable. Cameron Diaz held her own, but I would have preferred her character find her strength a little earlier on. She rebuilds cars; she’s a tough cookie. Yet she at times is just a whiny brat. But of course Knight and Day was not about Cameron Diaz, she was just used to set-up Tom Cruises performance and there is nothing wrong with that.

The Directive

This is a solid entry into the Summer movie line-up. With enough romance and action to make it a great date movie.

Is this the Knight to save the Summer movie season?
