The Digest
Because of the nature of the beast that is Hollywood, the LAPD has decided to create the Priority Homicide Division. With the creation of this division comes the installation of Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) from Atlanta. She looks like a big fluff of blond saccharine, but don't be fooled by her looks and outward disposition. She is called "The Closer" because she can get a confession out of just about anyone and close just about any case. She is also far from an airhead. Brenda knows her job and knows how to get it done. This doesn't stop people from within the department from trying to sabotage her career by bringing to light she had an affair with the Assistant Police Chief Will Pope (J.K. Simmons) years ago in Atlanta or by orchestrating a vote of no confidence.
But with Sergeant David Gabriel (Corey Reynolds) and FBI Special Agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney). She manages to earn the respect of her direct reports even if her colleagues wish she would go away.
The Dish
I've been a fan of this show since it began. Sedgwick's Brenda is strong and flawed, but owns her womanhood and compromises it for no one, even if it means that her team wants her gone. She has refused to become a masculine woman, just to prove she is tough and can do the job and she doesn't use her femininity to detract from any perceived incompetence. She is who she is, high heels and all. And at the end of the day her ability to do the job speaks for itself and that's all that really counts.
The DVD
SPECIAL FEATURES
Available Subtitles: Spanish, French
Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround)
13 episodes on four discs
22 minutes of unaired scenes
The unaired scenes made a slight impression on me, some of the stories were a little tighter with them, but honestly the episodes were fine without the extras.
The Directive
Season 2 is getting ready to start and I am really excited about it. Sedgwick wasn't nominated for this role for nothing. The Closer really is a very good show with a solid cast and great writing. Plus "Girl Power' rocks.

I confess - I love this show.
