Bruno (Jérémie Renier) and Sonia (Déborah François) live in a small Belgian town, barely getting by on Sonia’s unemployment benefits and Bruno’s proceeds from panhandling and petty theft. Their lives change forever, however, when Sonia gives birth to their baby. Unable to accept his parental responsibilities and desperate for money, Bruno sells the boy to a black market connection who promises to find the child an adoptive home. Realizing the error in his actions, Bruno sets out to try and undo his callous deed, leading him to a powerful personal transformation. L’ENFANT (THE CHILD) was praised by critics.
