The Digest
Luke (Johnny Knoxville) and Bo (Seann William Scott) Duke are two cousins who have run rough shod over the countryside of Hazzard County in Georgia. Along with their cousin Daisy (Jessica Simpson), they help run their Uncle Jesse’s (Willie Nelson) moonshine business.
With their souped up Dodge Charger, the boys criss cross the town making delieveries; making out with all the young ladies; and trying to outwit and out fox Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane. Not to mention, the county commissioner, Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds) who is determined to put the boys away so he can seize their land and with the help of, Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane (M.C. Gainey), he does just that.
Now the boys have to figure out why Boss Hogg wants their land.
With Daisy “Shaking her ass” to help them out and the speed and power if the General Lee to back them up, the Dukes just may get to the bottom of the situation before it’s too late.
The Dish
Okay let me get this out of the way: I liked it. I’m as surprised as you are, believe me. I can only attribute it to the low expectations I had for it going in. Let’s be real anyone who saw the television show, knows that it was not thought provoking story telling. This was just good ole dumb fun. Predictable, but fun. (Who didn’t see the Flag issue from a mile a way?)
That said, I do not think a theatrical release was necessary. Aside from the cursing, it is nothing worse that what they show on the big three and very tame compared to what they show on FX and USA.
I do not remember Bo Duke being so dumb. Didn’t he have a little bit of smarts to him? I really did not like this interpretation of Bo and M.C. Gainey’s take on Roscoe P (!.) Coltrane was uninspired. He was hard to watch, no painful to watch. I wasn’t too thrilled with the performance Burt Reynolds turned in either. I was, however, very happy with Willie Nelson as Uncle Jesse. He was my favorite part of the entire movie.
The Directive
So the big question is do I recommend this? If you have the ability to set your bar low and just drool over dumb fun, then sure, go see it. If you expect a plot; decent acting; and good directing this is NOT the movie for you. Notice I said “A Plot” not “A Good Plot”.
.
Joyfully and unapologetically stupid. A very very bad movie, but I enjoyed it anyway.
