The Digest

In 2054 crime is running rampant everywhere in the U.S. except for Washington D.C. Why? Because Washington has the Department of Pre-Crime -an elite team that with the help of 3 precognitive people, can see murders before they happen. We see exactly how this works as watch the police team lead by, John Anderton (Tom Cruise), race against time to solve case #1108. A mild mannered man living in a cookie cutter house is about to kill his wife and her lover.

Because the system appears to be a success, Director Burgess (Max von Sydow) wants to take his program national. This brings scrutiny from the Feds -one in particular, Detective Ed Witwer (Colin Farrell), who begins to question the system. How do you know that the perp is going to go through with the crime? What if free will takes over predestination? John insists that the system is fail proof until case #1109 rolls down the pipe. Case #1109 shows that John Anderton killing someone that he doesn't even know. He insists that he is being set up and set out to prove his innocence, but in doing so, won't he prove that there is a flaw in the system? What happens then?

The Dish

Although this wasn't a documentary on the state of black folks in the future, I'd like to point out that in 2054, the city otherwise known as "The Chocolate City" is anything but. Which really begs the question, "Where are the black folks?" A perfect D.C. equals no crime and minimal black folks? I get tired of seeing a future that doesn't have people who look like me in it. But I'll play along this time.

Despite the lack of color in this flick, I really did enjoy it. Report was a roller coaster ride with unexpected twists. Cruise gave a convincing performance of a grieving father who is teetering on the edge. He is being pushed closer and closer by his quest to prove his innocence and his on going drug use. Max von Sydow seemed in his element as the dispassionate and aloof director of the Department of Pre-crime. All others just kind of faded in the background. This movie was all about Tom Cruise, the gadgets and the philosophy behind pre-crime.

The Directive

This is definitely a must see and worth every penny. This was Summer movie fare at it's best.
Green

Minority Report gets an "A".
